Modular Washroom Concept
Modular and sustainable buildings using local materials ensure maintainable latrines. These facilities can offer communal hand washing stations for children and education on hand washing reduce disease spread.
An integrated approach—including water access, resilient facilities, communal hand washing, and hygiene education—can safeguard health and promote gender equity in these communities.
Poor sanitation poses significant health risks, especially for women and girls.
Challenge
Poor sanitation poses significant health risks, especially for women and girls. Lack of clean water hampers hygiene during menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth.
Building sustainable latrines with local materials offers long-term solutions while dispelling myths and promoting safe menstrual practices. This integrated strategy is crucial for improving health outcomes and fostering gender equity in underserved communities.
Goals
The fully circular, modular washroom concept designed by EWB-NL is a means to provide quality sanitation to communities without high costs. The design is currently in proof-of-concept phase.
Activities
Architects and engineers at Engineers Without Borders NL are developing the building and sanitation concept for the modular washroom.
Needs
We are looking for funding to build a proof of concept of the design.
