Structural engineer with project management experience | volunteer

EWB-NL’s Structures Portfolio is looking for a passionate and dedicated structural engineer with ample project management experience.

The Structures Portfolio focuses on SDG 11, but is complimentary to all SDGs, depending on the project.

Our portfolio’s main drivers are:

  • 11.1 SAFE AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING: Ensure access for all to adequate, safe, and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums.
  • 11.3 INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE URBANISATION: Enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanisation and capacity for participatory, integrated, and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries.

As structural engineer and project manager, you will be managing the design of a school for secondary school children in Southwest Zimbabwe, while supporting the team and local stakeholders with structural design and engineering work.

Our team includes an architect, water engineer, electrical engineer, and landscape architect /urban planner.

Your activities

You will be supporting us with the following activities:

  • You will lead workshops to develop the project, either in person or remotely.
  • You will assist in developing the school design, structure and building concept. Deliverables include structural design reports based on local standards and basic drawings/sketches, BoQ.
  • You will develop details for the connection joints that are technically feasible and affordable for our local stakeholders to build.
  • You will develop a knowledge base of sustainable structural concepts and materials that can be implemented widely in future projects.
  • You will advise the local partner, and the local artisans, in ways to optimise the building concepts during project realisation.
  • You will have contact with local stakeholders/authorities.
  • You will have contact with our partner engineering firm(s) for needed assistance / involvement
  • Travel to the project site might be required.

Applicant Requirements

  • Experience in project management.
  • Great people and communication skills.
  • Project experience in developing countries is preferred.
  • Experience in developing feasible details and sections to guide local stakeholders/artisans.
  • 4 hours of dedicated volunteer work on the project per week.
