Job Description

Project description

Bionexx is a producer of Artemisin, the most important molecule for Malaria cure medicine. Bionexx aims to make an impact in Madagascar on the livelihood of smallholder farmer families, contribute positively to degraded land restoration and practice and integrate a circular production process.

In November 2019, Engineers without Border (EWB-NL) visited Bionexx facilities. The objective was to find opportunities to make their production process more sustainable, safer and circular. As a result of the visit, a number of projects were defined. Some of these projects require the expertise of experienced process engineers.

Job Description

There are several projects where EWB and Bionexx need the support of process engineers:

  1. Follow up on safety recommendations. The objective of this project is to provide practical advice in order to carry out several HSE improvements
  2. Debottlenecking of the evaporation/condensation step. In order to unlock the factory potential for the production of the malaria curing medicine, Bionexx needs to debottleneck their production process. The evaporation and condensation of solvents is identified as the limiting step. During this project it is required to carry out energy balance calculations, heat exchanger rating calculations, pressure drop calculations, provide advice on potential operational issues limiting the heat exchange capacity of the system, etc.
  3. Solvents mass balance including losses: the current emission of solvents to the atmosphere represents a negative environmental impact. In order to avoid this issue, it is necessary to carry out a solvent mass balance to identify and quantify the main causes for solvent losses so that they can be prevented.
  4. Alternative method for reactor unloading: The current solid unloading of the reactor is done manually, what brings significant safety risks. The goal of this project is to study and develop alternative systems for the unloading of the reactors.

Applicant Requirements

  • Several years of experience as process engineer
  • Available ~4h/week to work on the project
  • Assist to the project team meetings in Rotterdam (once or twice per month)
